Dividers
Dividers

These dividers recall William Blake’s etching The Ancient of Days, depicting God the Creator. Eduardo Paolozzi referred to Blake’s image of Isaac Newton using dividers for his sculpture outside the new British Library, although Blake was no fan of the scientific method. Dividers (along with the straight edge) are the main tool of Euclidean geometry. Their practical task for the mason is drawing circles and making systems of proportion.
