When I started work at English Heritage as an architectural stone carver there was a new range of tools needed. These are scrapers for smoothing soft limestone – the metal ones on the right are blacksmith made – probably from Tiranti. The wooden-handled ones are all home made from plumbers threaded joints attached to a metal shaft and then the handle, designed to accept a bent steel screw. At top left is a simple clamp for sections of hacksaw blade.
